EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women's Soccer make their 2022 regular season home debut from Strassweg Field Thursday against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at 6 p.m. Admission to the match is free thanks to The Women's Hospital.
USI (1-1-0) split their season-opening road trip last week with a pair of 1-0 contests against North Dakota and Winona State. The Screaming Eagles lost at North Dakota before capturing a win at Winona State, the Eagles' first win as an NCAA Division I program.
Freshman midfielder
Peyton Murphy (Bargersville, Indiana) has been an impact player early in her USI career, and she continued her strong start to the season by scoring the first goal for USI at the NCAA Division I status on Saturday. Besides the game-winning goal, she also placed all four of her shots on target.
Saturday's road win also included the 30
th career shutout for senior goalkeeper
Maya Etienne (Midland, Michigan), extending her all-time mark in the USI record books. Etienne has played all 180 minutes between the posts for USI in two matches, making a total of six saves.
Southern Indiana's offense has picked up right where it left off in 2021, proving to be a high-volume shooting team. In 2021, the Screaming Eagles were third in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with 282 shots, averaging 14.1 shots per game. Through two matches in 2022, USI is at the top among Ohio Valley Conference teams with 31 shots, averaging 15.5 per game. SIU Edwardsville is second with 24 shots. After two matches, USI is outshooting their opponents 31 to 13 and 17 to 7 in shots on goal.
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is out of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in NCAA Division III. Rose-Hulman went 12-3-2 with a 7-1-1 conference record in the 2021 season. They went as far as the HCAC Tournament semifinals before falling 2-1 against Hanover College. The Fightin' Engineers return three of their top-four scorers from last year, including Lane Lawrence and Kyra Hicks who each scored seven goals last year. Sarah Shoemaker had six goals in 2021. Overall, in 2021, Rose-Hulman had the second-best scoring offense in the HCAC with 49 goals, while having the top defenses in the conference with only nine goals allowed. Much of that credit goes to senior goalkeeper Natalie Dillon. In her junior season, Dillon made 17 starts with 43 saves and 0.57 goals against average. She also had six solo shutouts. Head coach Amy Helliwell is a 1996 graduate from the University of Southern Indiana and played her prep career at Evansville Reitz Memorial High School.
