EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball lost the three-game series opener with Davenport University, 12-4, Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles are 7-5 this spring, while Davenport is 7-10 in 2022.
USI started quick with a 1-0 lead in the first when sophomore designated hitter
Trent Robinson (Louisville, Kentucky) doubled in junior rightfielder
Ren Tachioka (Japan) with two outs. Davenport, however, responded with a three-spot in the second and third frames to lead 6-1.
The Panthers doubled the lead to 12-1 with a six-run seventh, while the Eagles were held hitless from the first inning until the eighth. USI tried to get back into the game with a three-run eighth, cutting the deficit to the eventual 12-4 final.
The three-run eighth was highlighted by a two-run home run by freshman catcher
Cordell Coburn (Evansville, Indiana). The home run was Coburn's first at USI.
On the mound, junior right-hander
Garrett Welch (New Castle, Indiana) started and took the loss for the Eagles. Welch allowed six runs on eight hits and one walk in 3.1 innings of work.
