Eagles rebound with DH sweep

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball senior right-hander Brice Stuteville (Rockport, Indiana) posted a win and a save in a doubleheader sweep of  Davenport University, 3-1 and 7-1,  Monday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles are 9-5 this spring, while Davenport is 7-12 in 2022.

Game 1:
USI open the doubleheader with a 3-1 victory behind six strong innings on the mound by sophomore right-hander Trent Robinson (Louisville, Kentucky) and a strong performance by the bullpen.

Robinson (2-1) allowed a first inning run before blanking the Panthers through 6.1 innings of work. He allowed the run on seven hits, while striking out three in the start.

USI sophomore Nick Belcher (Owensboro, Kentucky) followed Robinson to the mound in the seventh and got the Eagles out of a bases loaded jam by getting the final two outs of the frame. Sophomore left-hander Blake Ciuffetelli (Newburgh, Indiana) and senior right-hander Brice Stuteville closed out the win by tossing scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth, respectively, to close out the victory for the Eagles.

Stuteville, who allowed a hit and stranded a runner in the ninth, recorded his team-best third save of the season.

At the plate, USI scored all the runs it would need in the second, third, and eighth. The Eagles tied the score 1-1 in the second when freshman catcher Cordell Coburn (Evansville, Indiana) knocked in USI's first run of the game on a single to right center.

The eventual game-winning run came in the third inning when senior shortstop Ethan Hunter (Terre Haute, Indiana) hit his second home run of the season. The Eagles sealed the victory in the eighth when junior leftfielder Evan Kahre (Evansville, Indiana) knocked in junior second baseman Lucas McNew (Floyds Knobs, Indiana) with a bases loaded fielder's choice.

Game 2:
USI scored all the runs it needed in the first inning and cruised to a 7-1 win in the nightcap to complete the doubleheader sweep. The Eagles added one in the third, two in the fourth, and one more in the fifth in addition to a three-run first.

Senior right-handed Brice Stuteville (2-0) posted his first win of the season as a starter, going five innings after getting the save in the opener. Stuteville allowed an unearned run on three hits and two walks, while striking out three.

At the plate, USI junior second baseman Lucas McNew led the Eagles with a pair of hits, two runs scored, and two RBI.

Up Next for the Eagles:

USI returns to the road next week when it visits Drury University for a non-conference three-game series March 18-20. The series starts Friday at 4 p.m., continues Saturday at 1 p.m., and concludes Sunday at noon.

Drury is 13-4 this spring, but has lost its last three contests entering the series with USI.

The Eagles and the Panthers last met in 2019 when Drury took two-of-three in the opening weekend of GLVC play. USI has had the upper-hand for most of the series, leading 22-10.
