The Eagles open the home schedule looking to rebound from a tough loss at the University of Missouri Monday night, 97-91. After a slow first half, USI screamed back into the game during the second half by shooting a blistering 71.4 percent of the field (20-28) and 82.4 percent from beyond the arc (14-17). The Eagles also outscored the Tigers, 60-50, in the final 20 minutes.
Senior guard
Jelani Simmons (Columbus, Ohio) led the Eagles' offensive attack with a game-high 23 points, 17 coming in the final half. The senior was a perfect six-of-six from the field in the second 20 minutes, including a perfect five-of-five from beyond the arc.
The Eagles trail the all-time series versus the Salukis, 3-0, and have not played SIU in the regular season since the 1984-85. SIU won the first meeting between the two teams in 1981-82 (84-59) be-fore taking the matchups in 1983-84 (103-73) and 1984-85 (83-70).
USI narrowly missed winning an exhibition game at SIU in 2009-10 when the Salukis won, 71-69, on a last second shot.
Southern Illinois University opened its 2022-23 campaign with a 94-63 victory over the University of Arkansas Little Rock November 7. The Salukis had four players in double-digits, led by guards Lance Jones and Dalton Banks with 14 points each.
