EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Volleyball sophomore
Katherine Koch (Belleville, Illinois) racked up 15 kills, 11 assists and 17 digs Friday afternoon as the Screaming Eagles turned back a come-from-behind bid to post a 25-14, 25-12, 19-25, 25-23 non-conference victory over visiting University of Missouri-St. Louis during the second day of the USI Invitational at Screaming Eagles Arena.
Koch's triple-double is believed to be the first triple-double for a USI volleyball player since Shannon Wells racked up 13 kills, 10 aces and 11 digs in a three-set victory over the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on October 4, 2002.
The Screaming Eagles (4-2) tore through the Tritons in the opening two frames, converting 30.7 percent of their attack attempts into kills en route to 11 and 13-point victories. Missouri-St. Louis (3-3), meanwhile, was limited to a .015 attacking percentage in the first two sets as USI took firm control of the match.
Set three, however, went the Tritons' way as USI was held to a negative .059 attacking percentage en route to a six-point loss.
USI rallied from a 10-5 deficit to edge the Tritons in the fourth and final frame. Freshman outside hitter
Abby Weber (Fishers, Indiana) came up big in the fourth set as she had six of her 13 kills in the frame.
In addition to Koch's 17 digs, the Eagles got 24 digs from senior libero
Callie Gubera (Thorntown, Indiana) as well as nine kills and 16 digs from sophomore outside hitter
Leah Anderson (Bloomington, Illinois). Weber added 14 digs to her 13 kills, while senior middle blocker
Sidney Hegg (Menasha, Wisconsin) finished with nine kills and a career-high 10 blocks.
Senior setter
Casey Cepicky (St. Louis, Missouri) added 33 assists, 14 digs and six blocks for the Eagles, who face Davis & Elkins at later this evening.
