EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Senior setter
Casey Cepicky (St. Louis, Missouri) became the 12th player in program history to reach the 1,000-career dig plateau Friday night as University of Southern Indiana Volleyball earned a 25-20, 25-16, 25-20 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over visiting Truman State University at Screaming Eagles Arena.
Cepicky, who also became the first player in program history with the combination of 3,000 career assists and 1,000 career digs, entered the night needing just five digs to reach the historic milestone. She got that out of the way in the first six points of the match as the All-GLVC performer finished the opening frame one dig shy of a double-double.
Her 11 assists and nine digs in the opener helped the Screaming Eagles to a five-point win and one-set lead in the match. Sophomore outside hitter
Leah Anderson (Bloomington, Illinois) added seven kills, a .500 attacking percentage and three aces as USI jumped out to the early advantage.
USI (9-4, 3-2 GLVC) relied on the strong play of sophomore right side hitter
Katherine Koch (Belleville, Illinois) in the second set. Koch racked up eight kills and a .800 attacking percentage on 10 swings as USI rolled to a nine-point win and two-set advantage.
Truman State (2-12, 0-5 GLVC) had no answer for Koch in the third set either as the All-GLVC honoree from last season racked up six of her match-high 16 kills to lead USI to a five-point match-clinching win in the third frame.
In addition to her 16 kills, Koch finished with a .433 attacking percentage and eight digs, while Anderson added 12 kills, a .320 attacking percentage, five aces and 11 digs.
Cepicky finished with 35 assists, three kills and a match-high 16 digs, while junior middle hitter
Taylor Litteken (Foristell, Missouri) chipped in eight kills and a .500 hitting clip. Senior libero
Callie Gubera (Thorntown, Indiana) rounded out the Eagles' statistical leaders with 12 digs.
USI, which out-hit the Bulldogs .250 to .124, return to action Saturday at 3 p.m. when it hosts the University of Missouri-St. Louis at Screaming Eagles Arena. The Tritons (10-3, 5-0 GLVC) are coming off a three-set sweep at McKendree University Friday night and have lost just two sets since losing a non-conference tilt with the Eagles nearly a month ago at the USI Invitational.
Following Saturday's match, USI Volleyball players will be signing their 2021 schedule posters as well as hosting a free kids clinic for children in grades 3-5. Admission to the match is free to all kids clinic participants as well as the participants' parents.
