Career efforts push Eagles past Tritons

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Sophomore outside hitter Leah Anderson (Bloomington, Illinois) and sophomore right side hitter Katherine Koch (Belleville, Illinois) combined for 40 kills and 51 digs as University of Southern Indiana Volleyball rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat visiting University of Missouri-St. Louis 25-20, 23-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-10 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference bout Saturday afternoon at Screaming Eagles Arena.

Anderson had two of her career-high 23 kills in the Screaming Eagles' 7-1 run that ended the fifth set, turning a one-point deficit into a five-point win in the process. Senior middle blocker Sidney Hegg (Menasha, Wisconsin) came up big for the Eagles in the deciding frame as she racked up four kills on four swings, including three kills in the 7-1 run. Hegg finished the match with 12 kills and four blocks.

USI (10-4, 4-2 GLVC) relied on Anderson and Koch early in the match as the duo combined for 13 kills in USI's five-point opening-set victory. Senior setter Casey Cepicky (St. Louis, Missouri) racked up 15 assists in the frame as USI grabbed the one-set advantage.

The Tritons (10-4, 5-1 GLVC), however, hit .353 in the second frame as they claimed a two-point win to even the match at a set apiece. They rallied from a 22-19 deficit in the third set to earn another two-point lead and put the Eagles in one-game deficit heading into the fourth frame.

USI, though, won five of the final six rallies in the fourth set to break a 20-20 stalemate and force a deciding fifth frame. The Eagles benefited from the attack of Anderson and junior middle hitter Taylor Litteken (Foristell, Missouri), who each had four kills in the fourth game.

Neither team was able to create separation in the fifth frame, but a 3-0 Missouri-St. Louis run gave the Tritons a 9-8 lead. The Eagles, however, got back-to-back kills from Hegg to flip the one-point deficit into a one-point lead; then followed that with kills from Anderson and freshman outside hitter Abby Weber (Fishers, Indiana) out of a Missouri-St. Louis timeout to go up 12-9.

The Tritons scored following their second timeout to get back to within two points, but USI wrapped kills from Hegg and Anderson around a Missouri-St. Louis attacking error to secure the five-point, match-deciding win.

In addition to her 23 kills, Anderson had two aces and a career-high 26 digs. Koch finished with a season-high 17 kills and a career-high 25 digs to go along with three blocks, while freshman outside hitter Abby Bednar (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) came off the bench to finish with nine kills and a .320 attacking percentage.

Cepicky finished with a career-high 61 assists, six blocks, four kills and 12 digs, while Weber and senior libero Callie Gubera (Thorntown, Indiana) respectively added 10 and 21 digs. Litteken rounded out the Eagles' statistical leaders with seven kills and four blocks.

The Tritons were led by reigning GLVC Offensive Player of the Year Charlotte Richards, who finished with 28 kills and 11 digs, while senior libero Megan Woll added 34 digs.

USI returns to action Tuesday at 6 p.m. (CDT) when it visits the University of Indianapolis in the first of eight consecutive matches away from Screaming Eagles Arena. The Greyhounds (8-7, 4-2 GLVC) are coming off a four-set home win over Quincy University and have won two straight matches.
