USI completes sweep with 2-0 shutout

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team completed a homestand sweep with a 2-0 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. The Eagles see their record go to 2-3-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the GLVC, while UMSL goes to 2-6-0, 0-5-0 GLVC.

USI controlled much of the first half, including the scoreboard, taking a 1-0 lead into the intermission. Sophomore midfielder Ryan Nevins (St. Peters, Missouri) gave the Eagles the lead at 33:53 by knocking in a crossing pass from freshman forward Zach Barton (St. Louis, Missouri). The goal was Nevins' second of the season.

In the second half, a back-and-forth battle ensued with each team getting five shots at their opponent's goal. The Eagles broke through the Tritons' defense for a second time and just five seconds remaining when junior forward Graham Miller (Owensboro, Kentucky) gave the match its 2-0 final score off an assist by senior midfielder Morgan Kelly (Shelbyville, Kentucky). The goal was Miller's second of the season.

Between the posts, junior goalkeeper Justin Faas (Carmel, Indiana) got his second win of the season after facing nine Triton shots and making four saves.

The Eagles are on the road next four games, beginning with Southwest Baptist University Friday at 1 p.m. in Bolivar, Missouri, and Drury University October 6 at 2:30 p.m. in Springfield, Missouri. The USI-Southwest Baptist match-up will be the first meeting between the two programs in GLVC play.

USI won the only match with Southwest Baptist, 3-0, in 1999 on the road. Drury holds an 11-2-3 advantage in the all-time series, but USI has swept the Panthers the last two seasons, 3-2 in 2017 and 2-1 in 2018, at Strassweg Field.
