Eagles get the DH sweep of Tritons

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball swept a doubleheader from University of Missouri-St. Louis, 4-3 and 15-4, Saturday at the USI Baseball Field. USI moves its record to 25-18 overall and 17-12 GLVC, while UMSL goes to 9-35, 8-21 GLVC.

The victories keep USI in the hunt for a GLVC Tournament berth. The Screaming Eagles end today's action tied for sixth in the conference standings, tied with the University of Indianapolis and a game ahead of Bellarmine University and Lewis University. USI earned the tie-breakers with Bellarmine and Lewis earlier in the season.

Game 1:
The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the eighth on a sophomore shortstop Ethan Hunter (Terre Haute, Indiana) two-out infield single to win the opener 4-3.

USI opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and led 2-0 through the first five frames. Junior centerfielder/rightfielder Zach Pate (Evansville, Indiana) gave the Eagles the first inning lead with a two-out single, scoring sophomore leftfielder Aaron Euler (Evansville, Indiana) and junior designated hitter Manny Lopez (Santo Domingo, D.R.)

UMSL plated two in the sixth to tie the game on a pair of two-out singles and took a 3-2 lead in the seventh with a third two-out single to set the stage for Hunter in the bottom of the eighth.

The Eagles loaded the bases with a base hit and a walk by freshman catcher Lucas McNew (Floyds Knobs, Indiana) and Euler before Pate filled the bags with a two-out walk. Hunter sent a full-count pitch back up the middle, beating out the infield single while McNew and Euler sprinted home with the tying and winning runs.

USI junior right-hander Jacob Bowles (Mt. Washington, Kentucky) picked up the win in relief. Bowles (3-1) scattered a hit and three walks over two frames, in addition to striking out three.

The final frame for USI was covered by junior right-hander Tyler Hagedorn (Evansville, Indiana), who posted his second save of the season. Hagedorn faced the minimum in the ninth after allowing a single that was erased in a double-play.

Eagles' senior starting right-hander Austin Krizan (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) went the first six-plus innings and got a no-decision. Krizan allowed three runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out five.

Game 2:
USI scored eight times in the first inning and cruised to a 15-4 victory in the nightcap. Junior designated hitter Manny Lopez ignited the eight-run first inning with a three-run triple, while freshman catcher/third baseman Lucas McNew had a pair of hits in the rally as USI sent 12 batters to the plate in the opening frame.

The Eagles would go on to add a run in the second, busted the game open with a four-run fifth inning, and sealed the victory with two more in the sixth for the 15-4 victory. USI's four-run fifth was highlighted by a three-run blast by sophomore leftfielder Aaron Euler, hit team-best ninth of the season.

On the mound, junior left-hander Paul Perez (Puerto la Cruz Venezuela) posted his third win of the season. Perez (3-3) scattered four hits and four walks in six innings, striking out five.

Up Next for the Eagles:
USI concludes the three-game series and Alumni Weekend with UMSL Sunday at 2 p.m.
