Defensive woes lead to USI loss

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball was plagued by six errors in falling to the University of Illinois Springfield, 18-2, Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Illinois. USI moves its record to 22-18 overall and 15-12 in the GLVC, while Illinois Springfield goes to 28-11-1, 18-9 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles, who were held hitless for the four innings, allowed one in the third before the Prairie Stars blew the game open with 14 combined runs, aided by six USI errors, in the fourth (nine) and fifth (five) frames. Illinois Springfield also would add another three runs in the sixth in the 18-2 run-rule final.

The highlights of a rough game for the Eagles was a senior first baseman Nathan Kuester (Rockport, Indiana) and senior leftfielder LaWan Rollins (Evansville, Indiana) scoring on the aid of a pair of Illinois Springfield errors in the fifth and sixth innings.

USI junior right-hander Tyler Hagedorn (Evansville, Indiana) suffered the loss in his third start of the season. Hagedorn (0-1) allowed five runs, two earned, on three hits and two walks in 3.2 innings of work.

Up Next for the Eagles:
The Eagles return home next week and will play seven of the final eight games at the USI Baseball Field. The final two weeks of the 2019 regular season features a non-conference game with Oakland City University (April 23), a non-conference road game at Kentucky Wesleyan College (April 24), and three-game conference series with the University of Missouri-St. Louis (April 27-28) and Maryville University (May 3-4).

The Mighty Oaks, who had their three-game series with Lincoln College washed out this weekend, are 19-12 overall in 2019, going .500 (5-5) in the last 10 games, and 1-2 against teams from the GLVC this spring.

USI leads the all-time series with Oakland City, 87-11, after winning the only meeting last spring, 6-3. The Eagles also have won nine of the last 11 matchups since 2008.

The Eagles finish the non-conference schedule Wednesday with their visit to KWC in Owensboro, Kentucky. KWC, who starts a four-game series at Alderson-Broaddus University today, are 19-17 overall after its win over USI last week.

Despite last week's loss to the Panthers, USI holds a 98-75 lead in the all-time series with KWC after the 12-7 loss on Tuesday. USI holds a 4-2 advantage over KWC at Panther Park since 2013.
