EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women's Soccer lost in a heartbreaker to Maryville University, 2-1, Friday evening at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles go to 10-5-1 overall and are 8-5-1 GLVC, while Maryville is 9-5-1 overall, 8-4-1 GLVC.
With the loss, USI falls to seventh in the GLVC standings, a half-game behind sixth place Truman State University (9-6-1, 9-5-0 GLVC) and full game behind fifth-place Bellarmine University (11-3-3, 8-3-3 GLVC). The Eagles, despite the loss, have secured a spot in the GLVC Tournament.
USI had to rally in the first half despite having an 11-2 lead in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Maryville, which had a 53-47 lead in time of procession in the first 45 minutes, got on the board first with a tally at 24:16 before sophomore forward
Katlyn Andres knotted the score at 1-1 at 26:49. Andres got her team-high seventh goal of the season off leading pass by sophomore midfielder
Madison Cady.
The match became very even-handed in the second half with both teams posting seven shots, until Maryville got the game winner at 88:08.
USI concludes the 2019 regular season by hosting Missouri University of Science & Technology Sunday at noon for Senior Day. Missouri S&T ran its record to 5-8-3 overall and 5-7-2 in the GLVC after losing 2-0 at McKendree University this evening.
The Eagles lead the all-time series with Missouri S&T, 10-5-1, after the two teams battled to a 0-0 double overtime tie in 2019. USI also has battled the Miners to a draw over the last five years at 2-2-1.
