USI suffers heartbreaking OT loss

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Men's Soccer lost a heartbreaking overtime decision to Maryville University, 2-1, Friday evening at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles see their record go to 7-6-3 overall and 7-5-2 in the GLVC, while Maryville goes to 13-2-2, 10-2-2 GLVC.

With the loss, USI remains tied for fifth in the GLVC with Lindenwood University (7-5-4, 6-4-4 GLVC) and  Drury University (9-6-2, 7-5-2 GLVC). The Eagles, despite tonight's shortfall, does clinch a spot in the GLVC Tournament.

USI struck first in the opening half when sophomore midfielder Eli Quivey gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead on his second goal of the year. Quivey was assisted on his goal by senior midfielder Sean Rickey and freshman forward Dan Hartman. USI had the momentum with a 10-5 lead in shots by the end of the 1-1 first half.

In the second half, the squads battle back and forth over the pitch with the Saints having a slight advantage in shots, 6-4, and in corners, 5-3. The 1-1 draw would carry through the end of regulation and into overtime.

Maryville, however, would have the final say as it scored the game-winner with 2:22 left in the overtime for the 2-1 victory.

USI concludes the 2019 regular season by hosting Missouri University of Science & Technology Sunday at 2:30 p.m. for Senior Day. Missouri S&T saw its record go to 5-9-2 overall and 4-8-2 GLVC after falling 1-0 at McKendree University this evening.

The Eagles trail the all-time series with Missouri S&T, 15-11-3, after posting a 2-0 win last fall in Rolla, Missouri, on goals by Rickey. USI also posted a win over the Miners in 2017 that broke a nine-match winless streak.
