USI Softball headed north for four games

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Softball begins a four-game road trip Saturday at noon when it travels to Somers, Wisconsin, to take on the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader.

The Screaming Eagles (14-9, 3-1 GLVC), who are receiving votes outside the latest NFCA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, conclude the four-game road trip Sunday at 11 a.m. (CDT) when they visit the No. 12 University of Indianapolis for a conference doubleheader.

Live stats and GLVC Sports Network coverage for both doubleheaders can be accessed at GoUSIEagles.com. GLVCSN coverage for Saturday's contests is dependent upon weather.

USI Softball Notes
• Recapping last week. USI Softball swept Bellarmine University in its only action of the week. The Eagles edged the Knights, 1-0, in the opener before rallying for a 7-6 win in game two.

• Last week's leaders. Freshman first baseman Haley Shouse went 4-of-5 from the plate with two doubles and three RBIs to lead the Eagles offensively, while freshman pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt racked up nine strikeouts in a two-hit shutout in the opener. Shouse had an RBI-double to push the only run across the plate in the opener.

• Leonhardt getting into a groove. Sophomore pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt has opened GLVC play on a strong note, posting back-to-back complete-game shutouts of Bellarmine and Maryville University. Leonhardt has allowed just five hits and struckout 19 batters in her first two GLVC contests.

• Youth leading Eagles at the plate in GLVC season. Shouse and sophomore shortstop Taylor Ricketts have been coming up big for the Eagles in GLVC play. Ricketts is hitting .500 (6-12) with an RBI and a pair of runs scored throughout the first four games of GLVC play, while Shouse is hitting .444 (4-9) with two doubles and three RBIs. On the year, junior second baseman Claire Johnson is hitting a team-best .375 with two doubles, six triples and 10 RBIs, while sophomore outfielder Allison Schubert is hitting .368 with five doubles, a triple, five home runs and 22 RBIs.

• Extra bases. USI has racked up 48 extra-base hits this season, including 21 doubles, 16 triples and 11 home runs. The 16 triples are three shy of the program's single-season record (19), which was set in 1994 and matched in 1995.

• Johnson racking up triples. Johnson has racked up an NCAA Division II-best six triples throughout the first 23 games, just five short of the single-season record of 11, which is held by Amber Huse (1995).

• Hitting streaks. Seven different players have recorded hitting streaks of five games or better this year, with Johnson posting a season-best 11-game hitting streak. Senior third baseman Mena Fulton has the longest current streak at three games.

• Beanball. After getting plunked 17 times a year ago, Fulton is tied for second in the GLVC in 2018 as she has been hit a team-high five times. Senior first baseman Marleah Fossett, who was hit a league-high 21 times last year, has been hit by pitches twice in 2018.

• Record book watch. Several USI players are in the USI career record books:
Caitlyn Bradley is tied for 15th in home runs (11);
Marleah Fossett is fourth in putouts (832) and tied for 15th in home runs (11);
Claire Johnson is fourth in triples (10);
Jennifer Leonhardt is tied for seventh in shutouts (13).
