Volleyball Set to Compete in Midwest Region Crossover

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - University of Southern Indiana Volleyball travels to Indianapolis to compete in the Midwest Region Volleyball Crossover, hosted by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this weekend.

The GLIAC announced the entire tournament schedule on Saturday: The Screaming Eagles are slated to take on Ohio Valley University and Kentucky Wesleyan College of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference and Northern Michigan University of the GLIAC.

Crossover Episode
 
  • The Midwest Region Crossover was created in 2008 as a tournament between the Great Lakes Valley Conference and the GLIAC, with the GMAC joining in 2015
  • USI holds a record of 16-14 in the tournament over its 10-year existence...The Eagles boast a 10-2 record in the last four years
  • In 2017, GLVC representatives combined for a 31-14 record over GLIAC and GMAC opponents, with seven GLVC members going 3-0 in the competition
  • The GLVC holds a .554 winning percentage (256-206) since the crossover began, and a .582 mark (82-59) since the GMAC joined the comeptition

The Screaming Eagles

In 2018
 
  • Junior right side hitter Elexis Coleman (Joliet, Illinois) remains as the Eagles' leading attacker, averaging 2.42 kills/set on a .260 hitting percentage...Freshman middle hitter Taylor Litteken (Foristell, Missouri) sits sixth in the GLVC in hitting percentage (.306) and averages 2.00 kills/set
  • The Eagles sit above tenth in the GLVC in one category: blocking. USI out-blocks its opponents 1.86 per set to 1.55 this season, with freshman middle blocker Sidney Hegg (Menasha, Wisconsin) leading with .90 blocks/set
  • Sophomore setter Casey Cepicky (St. Louis, Missouri) and senior setter Erika Peoples (Bloomington, Illinois) combine for over 10 assists per set in the 6-2 system
  • Senior libero Haley Limper leads USI with 3.57 digs/set and 19 service aces

The 2017 Midwest Crossover
 
  • Junior Mikaila Humphrey (Floyd Knobs, Indiana) led the attack for the Eagles, posting 48 kills (4.00/set) on a .308 hitting clip, including 18 kills on a .417 mark in the opening match against Northwood University
  • Cepicky guided the offense with 130 assists (10.83/set) and a double-double

The Competition

Ohio Valley University (6-13, 3-11 GMAC); Friday, 1:30pm (CDT):
 
  • The Fighting Scots sit sixth in the GMAC-East this season and have a home non-conference bout with Bluefield State College on Tuesday before taking on USI on Friday
  • The Eagles and Scots have four common opponents in 2018: Notre Dame College, the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Ohio Dominican University and Malone University...both teams have wins against NDC and ODU, losses against UMSL and Malone
  • Ohio Valley was one of USI's victories in the 2017 crossover, where the Eagles took down the Scots in straight sets...this is the only time in the last decade that USI and Ohio Valley have met
  • Outside hitter Yolaine Mosquera Lopez is Ohio Valley's top finisher, leading the Scots with 2.41 kills/set on a .206 hitting percentage... middle blocker Maria Cordoba is the most efficient hitter at .317
  • Defensive specialist Kalyn Makimoto holds a 4.30 digs/set average to lead the back row
  • Setters Alyssa DeSplinter and Kanana Fuimaono guide the offense, combining for 9.85 assists/set

Northern Michigan University (11-8, 3-8 GLIAC); Saturday, 9am:
 
  • Northern Michigan made NCAA Division II headlines on August 31, defeating then-No. 1 University of Minnesota-Duluth in four sets, who remains seventh in the nation in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll
  • The Wildcats sit fourth in the GLIAC-North and will face Cedarville University, whom they defeated in four sets back in August, before their date with the Eagles Saturday morning
  • Northern Michigan and USI have met five times since 2008, three times within the confines of the Midwest Crossover...The Eagles are 3-0 over Northern Michigan in the crossover, but 0-2 otherwise...The two teams last met in 2013, splitting three-set matches, both in neutral environments
  • Setter Lynzi Svoboda directs traffic for the Wildcats' offense, ranking sixth in the GLIAC with 9.69 assists/set...Outside hitter Leticia Antunes leads Northern Michigan (12th in the GLIAC) with 2.96 kills/set
  • Middle blocker Sarah Kuehn is seventh in the GLIAC in blocks (0.96/set) and eighth in hitting percentage (.293)
  • The Wildcats are fourth in the GLIAC in kills/set (13.11) and assists/set (11.94)

Kentucky Wesleyan College (11-10, 6-7 GMAC); Saturday, 3pm:
 
  • The Panthers and Eagles have met 47 times, 44 as GLVC foes until the 2012 move to the GMAC...USI holds a 46-1 record in the all-time series, dropping one five-set road match in 1995...The Eagles have not dropped a single set to the Panthers since 1996
  • The two squads have three common opponents this season: Maryville University, Malone and Ohio Dominican...The Panthers are 2-2 against those teams (1-1 against Maryville) while USI has only lost to Malone
  • Kentucky Wesleyan is second in the GMAC in opponent hitting percentage (.154), third in service aces (1.69/set), and fourth in digs (17.27/set)
  • Libero Nicole Venema is third in the GMAC in digs (4.97/set) while middle blocker Sierra Morrow sits seventh in blocks (.94/set)

On The Horizon

USI returns to GLVC action next weekend, hosting Missouri University of Science and Technology and No. 10 Drury University on October 19 and 20.
