EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Four University of Southern Indiana volleyball players notched double-digit kill totals Saturday night as the Screaming Eagles concluded the Dunn Hospitality Invitational with a 25-14, 25-23, 25-27, 25-14 victory over Southwest Baptist University at the Physical Activities Center.
Junior setter
Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana) racked up 45 assists and nine digs as the Eagles finished their opening weekend with a 3-1 record.
USI relied on the efforts of freshman outside hitter
Mary Kate Byrnes (Chicago, Illinois) in the opening frame. Byrnes hammered down five of her 13 kills in the set and had a blistering .444 attacking percentage as USI gained the upper hand in the match.
After hitting .393 in the first set, the Eagles' attack cooled off in the second stanza as the Bearcats made a late push. USI, which hit .170 in the second set and .190 in the third set, saw a 24-20 lead fizzle to a single point before earning the win on a Southwest Baptist ball handling error.
Senior right side hitter
Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana) had six of her match-high 14 kills in the second frame as USI's match lead ballooned to a two-set advantage.
The Eagles were not as fortunate in the third set as the Bearcats (1-3) fought off match point four times to earn the win and trim USI's match lead in half. Sophomore outside hitter
Shelbi Morris (Brazil, Indiana) paced USI's attack in the third set with six kills.
USI stormed out of the gates in the fourth set, building an early 9-2 cushion. Morris, who finished with 13 kills, and senior middle blocker
Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) each poured in four kills as the Eagles, who hit .276 in the fourth frame and .240 for the match, never let Southwest Baptist back into contention.
Winter finished with 11 kills and four blocks, while Oberbroeckling and sophomore libero
Shannon Farrell (Munster, Indiana) had 19 and 18 digs, respectively, to lead the Eagles defensively.
Farrell, Winter, and Shoultz each were named to the Dunn Hospitality Invitational All-Tournament team for their efforts on the weekend. Farrell averaged 5.43 digs per set, while Shoultz amassed 11.31 assists and 2.46 digs per set. Winter averaged 3.64 kills, 1.36 blocks, and a .479 attacking percentage on the weekend.
The Eagles return to action September 11-12 when they travel to Elkins, West Virginia, to take part in the Davis & Elkins Classic.
