Winter powers Eagles past Alderson Broaddus

ELKINS, W.V.—University of Southern Indiana senior middle blocker Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) racked up 24 points on 17 kills and eight blocks to lead the Screaming Eagles' volleyball team to a 25-10, 25-11, 22-25, 25-19 win over Alderson Broaddus University at the Davis & Elkins Classic Friday afternoon.

Winter, who has more total blocks (430) than any other player since 2000, hit .516 and had a kill on the final three points of the fourth frame to give the Eagles the win.

USI (4-1) dominated the match early on, hitting .433 and .391 in the first and second sets, respectively. The Eagles, however, cooled off significantly in the third set as they were held to a .000 attacking percentage, allowing the Rattlers to earn a three-point win and cut USI's match lead in half.

The Eagles used a 6-1 run early in the fourth set to build a 10-6 lead; then used a 4-0 spurt later in the frame to turn a one-point edge into a much-more comfortable 18-13 cushion.

In addition to Winter, who hammered down seven kills in the fourth set, the Eagles got 11 kills and nine digs from senior right side hitter Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana).

Junior setter Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana) had 36 assists, 10 digs, and five blocks for the Eagles, who finished with 13 team blocks.

Sophomore libero Shannon Farrell (Munster, Indiana) and sophomore outside hitter Shelbi Morris (Brazil, Indiana) finished with 21 and 18 digs, respectively, to lead USI's back row.

USI returns to action later today when they take on host Davis & Elkins College at 4 p.m. (CDT)
