LIBERTY, Mo. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team battled William Jewell College to a 3-2 draw Sunday afternoon in Liberty, Missouri. The Screaming Eagles stand at 3-4-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the GLVC, while the Cardinals sit at 2-5-2 overall and 1-4-1 in the GLVC.
The Screaming Eagles jumped on the board early just past the ten minute mark on a goal by junior
Braiden Acton (Evansville, Indiana). Acton fired home the shot off an assist from senior
Josh Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana) to put USI ahead 1-0.
William Jewell responded just past 22 minutes to tie the contest at 1-1. USI would waste no time answering the Cardinals score. At the 25:01 mark, junior
Brian Fischer (Jeffersonville, Indiana) recorded his first goal of the season. Fischer's goal was unassisted as the junior found space as well as the back of the net.
As was the case after the Eagles' first goal, the Cardinals once again found an equalizer. Within the final five minutes of play, William Jewell sent the match to overtime with a header off a corner kick.
Between the posts, sophomore goalkeeper
Adam Zehme (Orland Park, Illinois) earned the start, allowing one goal in the first half. Senior
Auston Bruder (Evansville, Indiana) finished the contest allowing one goal in the final 65 minutes.
William Jewell captured the advantage in shots, 16-14, but the Eagles owned the edge in corner kicks 7-4.
The Eagles are back at Strassweg Field next week with a pair of conference contests and a non-conference mid-week clash. USI opens the week with a Tuesday evening contest against Trevecca Nazarene University at 5 pm. The Eagles welcome the University of Indianapolis on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. before concluding the weekend with a Sunday afternoon contest against Saint Joseph's College at 2:30 p.m.
