ELKINS, W.V.—Senior right side hitter
Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana) had 17 kills and 16 dig as the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team defeated Slippery Rock University 27-25, 16-25, 25-13, 25-5 Saturday morning at the Davis & Elkins Classic.
Oberbroeckling had nine kills and hit .692 in the third and fourth sets combined as the Screaming Eagles shook off a bad second set to run away with their fourth straight win.
USI (6-1) earned a one-set lead after rallying from a 24-19 deficit for the victory in the opener.
Slippery Rock (6-1), however, dominated the second frame, holding the Eagles to a .044 attacking percentage to even the match at a set apiece.
Oberbroeckling and senior middle blocker
Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) combined for 10 kills and a perfect attacking percentage as the Eagles roared back to life in the third set. USI blasted Slippery Rock's defense to the tune of a .750 attacking percentage.
USI continued the onslaught in the fourth set, this time using a seven-block effort to go with a .385 attacking percentage to earn their most lopsided win in a set since defeating Kentucky Wesleyan College, 30-10, in the third set on October 12, 2007. The five points Slippery Rock had was the lowest point total by a USI opponent in a regulation set (sets 1-4) since USI defeated Oakland City University, 30-3, in the second set on September 10, 2001.
In addition to Oberbroeckling, the Eagles got 12 kills and 17 digs from sophomore outside hitter
Shelbi Morris (Brazil, Indiana) as well as 40 assists and seven blocks from junior setter
Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana).
Winter added nine kills and nine blocks, while sophomore libero
Shannon Farrell (Munster, Indiana) and freshman defensive specialist
Haley Limper (Springfield, Illinois) finished with 19 and 14 digs, respectively.
USI faces Concord University (West Virginia) Saturday at approximately 3 p.m. to conclude the D&E Classic.
