ELKINS, W.V.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team concluded the Davis & Elkins Classic with a 25-16, 25-17, 25-19 victory over Concord University (West Virginia) Saturday afternoon.
USI (7-1) hit .340 as a team, with junior middle hitter
Amy Zwissler (Bloomington, Indiana) coming off the bench to convert six of her eight attack attempts into kills for a .750 attacking percentage.
The Screaming Eagles wasted little time establishing control of the contest as they hit .448 in the opening frame. Senior middle blocker
Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) had four kills, two blocks, and a perfect attacking percentage to lead the Eagles in the opening set.
Sophomore outside hitter
Shelbi Morris (Brazil, Indiana) had five kills and a .500 attacking percentage as the Eagles cruised to an eight-point win in the second frame. Senior right side hitter
Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana) added five kills, while sophomore libero
Shannon Farrell (Munster, Indiana) and freshman defensive specialist
Haley Limper (Springfield, Illinois) each had five digs in the second stanza.
USI used a match-high .780 side-out percentage to methodically pull away from the Mountain Lions in the third set. Freshman outside hitter
Mary Kate Byrnes (Chicago, Illinois) had four kills and a .571 attacking percentage to lead the Eagles in the third set, while Morris had four kills and four digs. Farrell added seven of her match-high 13 digs in the third set.
For the match, Morris had 12 kills, a .312 attacking percentage, and eight digs to lead USI. Byrnes had eight kills and a .467 attacking percentage, while Oberbroeckling added eight kills and a .316 attacking percentage.
Junior setter
Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana) had a match-high 37 assists.
The Eagles, who earned a share of the D&E Classic championship with Shippensburg University by virtue of their 4-0 record on the weekend, open Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday at 7 p.m. when they visit No. 17 Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri.
