Eagles rally early, top D&E in three sets

ELKINS, W.V.—Sophomore outside hitter Shelbi Morris (Brazil, Indiana) and freshman outside hitter Mary Kate Byrnes (Chicago, Illinois) combined for 14 kills and a .343 attacking percentage as the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team defeated Midwest Region foe Davis & Elkins College 25-22, 25-19, 25-10 Friday evening at the D&E Classic.

Morris had eight kills and a .318 attacking percentage, while Byrnes added six kills and a .385 hitting percentage as the Screaming Eagles won their third straight match.

USI (5-1) struggled in the opening frame as it faced a 22-16 deficit and the possibility of falling behind 1-0 in the match. The Eagles, however, scored nine straight points to earn a three-point win and take a one-set lead in the match.

The Eagles, once again, rallied late in the second frame. USI won 11 of the last 13 rallies to erase a 17-14 deficit and earn a six-point victory.

USI wasted little time establishing control of the third set. The Eagles used a pair of 5-0 runs to build a 15-5 lead; then ended the frame with an 8-3 run to post the 15-point victory and three-set sweep.

Senior right side hitter Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana) led the Eagles with 11 kills, while senior middle blocker Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) finished with five kills and eight blocks.

Junior setter Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana) had 29 assists and 10 digs, while sophomore libero Shannon Farrell (Munster, Indiana) and freshman defensive specialist Haley Limper (Springfield, Illinois) finished with 14 and 10 digs, respectively.

USI returns to action Saturday at 10:30 a.m. (CDT) when it takes on Slippery Rock University. The Eagles conclude the D&E Classic Saturday at 3:30 p.m. when they face Concord University (West Virginia).
