EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team moved up one spot to No. 16 in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll as it gets set to visit McKendree University and the University of Illinois Springfield for a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheaders this weekend.
USI (19-3, 6-2 GLVC) begins its twinbill with McKendree Saturday at 2 p.m. in Lebanon, Illinois, while its doubleheader with Illinois Springfield on Sunday is set for a noon start in Springfield, Illinois.
The Screaming Eagles, who went 4-2 last week, are one of three GLVC schools in this week's poll. The University of Missouri-St. Louis moved up one spot to No. 3, while the University of Indianapolis held its spot at No. 12.
USI is off to its best 22-game start in program history and has achieved its highest ranking since finishing the 1998 season at No. 14. The Eagles enter the weekend ranked first in the GLVC in team batting average (.343) and second in team ERA (1.69).
Individually, senior pitcher/first baseman
Brooke Harmening (Whiteland, Indiana) is second in the GLVC in ERA (1.07) and wins (12). She begins the weekend with a 12-1 record and league-best three saves.
Senior second baseman
MacKenzi Dorsam (Dubois, Indiana) is third in the GLVC with a team-best 23 RBIs. She also leads the Eagles in batting average (.425), runs scored (18), and home runs (6).
McKendree enters the week with a 10-14 overall record and a 2-6 mark in GLVC play, while Illinois Springfield is 17-6 overall and is tied with USI for fourth in the GLVC standings with a 6-2 conference mark.
