Three-ball sinks USI women’s hoops

HOUGHTON, Mich.—Ashland University sank 13 three-pointers to hand the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team a disappointing 81-61 setback in the first round of the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Tournament Friday night.

Ashland (24-8) drained 10 of its first 11 shots, including its first four shots from behind the arc, to build a 24-8 lead early in the contest.

The Screaming Eagles (25-7) used an 8-0 run late in the half to cut their deficit to 33-25, but back-to-back three-pointers by Ashland stole USI's momentum and put the Eagles back into a double-digit deficit.

Ashland shot 53.1 percent in the opening half and was 8-of-13 (.615) from three-point range as it went into the break with a commanding 44-29 halftime advantage.

The Ashland Eagles shot 54.2 percent from the field in the second half and were 5-of-8 from downtown as they never let USI back into the contest.

Senior forward/center Anna Hackert (Evansville, Indiana) had 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead USI, while sophomore guard Tanner Marcum (New Albany, Indiana) and senior forward/center Mary O'Keefe (Edwardsville, Illinois) had 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Hackert, who recorded her 1,000th-career rebound Friday, finishes her career ranked third all-time at USI in scoring (1,607) and first in rebounding (1,009). She also recorded her school-record 21st double-double of the season and 46th of her career.

O'Keefe finishes her career ranked 13th all-time at USI in scoring (1,038) and 12th in rebounding (522), while senior forward/center Cayla Herbst (Glen Ellyn, Illinois) concludes her career ranked third all-time at USI with 101 career blocks.

Senior guard Taylor Woods drained six three-pointer to lead Ashland with 24 points and four assists. Junior guard McKenzie Miller had 15 points, while freshman forward Andi Daugherty chipped in 12 points and five rebounds.

Ashland advances to the NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament semifinals, where it faces top-seed and host Michigan Tech University at 6:30 p.m. (CDT).

USI concludes the season with the fifth-most wins (25) in program history. The Eagles made their ninth trip to the NCAA II Tournament and first since 2010.
