HUNTSVILLE, Ala.---University of Southern Indiana senior pitcher
Brooke Harmening broke the all-time record for most strikeouts as the Screaming Eagles stunned No. 12 University of Alabama Huntsville, 3-2, and defeated University of North Alabama, 5-3, Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Charger Chillout in Huntsville, Alabama.
Â
Harmening entered the day five strikeouts away from tying Katie Roberts (1998-2001) for 1
st all-time with 514 strikeouts. The Whiteland, Indiana, native, who improved to 4-0 on the season, threw all seven innings of USI's face-off with the Chargers, tallying three strikeouts, before throwing all of the second game versus the Lions, racking up another five.
Â
The Screaming Eagles leave Huntsville, Ala., at 6-0, having picked up four-straight wins before today's sweep.
Â
USI battled with the 12
th-ranked Chargers getting four hits on the board before a two-run homer by UAH's Emily Glover left the Eagles trailing 2-0 at the start of the sixth.
Â
After Harmening grounded out to third base it would be sophomore
Haley Hodges' (Portage, Indiana) single to left field, followed by a stolen base that would put the Eagles in scoring position and begin the road to victory.
Â
Junior
Janna Green (Glenwood, Indiana) answered the call-of-duty with a stand-up triple to left field, sending Hodges home for USI's first run, while sophomore
Lexi Reese (Labanon, Indiana) tallied her fifth RBI of the season sending Green home to tie it up at 2-2.
Â
With two outs and no one on, Freshman
Olivia Clark-Kittleson (Carbondale, Illinois) tallied a single along with a stolen base, before advancing to third off sophomore
Alisha Ludwig's (Terre Haute, Indiana) single to the same position. A muffled throw by UAH's catcher allowed for Clark-Kittleson to race home for the 3-2 lead and eventual victory.
Â
USI kept the winning momentum going into its meeting with North Alabama, as Green tallied an RBI-single, sending redshirt-freshman
Shelby Tate (Mattoon, Illinois) home for an early 1-0 lead.
Â
The Eagles' lead extended to 3-0 in the second following an RBI-single by junior
Toni Braun (Evanston, Indiana) and sacrifice fly from Harmening.
Â
North Alabama rallied for a comeback, but it would be senior
MacKenzi Dorsam's (Dubois, Indiana) two-run homer, in the bottom of the fourth, that would solidify USI's 6-0 record.
Â
USI takes a week off before hosting Kentucky Wesleyan in doubleheader action Tuesday, February 17 at 1 p.m., before welcoming teams to its two-week Spring Classic tournament February 21-22 and February 28- March 1.Â
