Eagles post shutout win over regional foe

MINNEOLA, Fla.--- Despite not being able to hit the field in three weeks due to unfortunate weather, the University of Southern Indiana softball team didn't skip a beat handing Midwest Region opponent Northwood University a 4-0 loss Friday afternoon in Minneola, Florida.

The Screaming Eagles improve to 7-0 while the Timberwolves, who opened up their 2015 slate Friday, continue on at 0-1.

After a quick first inning for both teams, the Eagles got the game going in the bottom of the second. With no outs and sophomore Haley Hodges (Portage, Indiana) and junior Janna Green (Glenwood, Indiana) on base, sophomore Lexi Reese (Lebanon, Indiana) sent the ball to center field, allowing both runners home for a 2-0 lead by USI. Reese ended the day at two-for-three having hit another single to center in the bottom of the sixth.

Later in the second with bases loaded and two outs on the board, redshirt freshman Shelby Tate (Mattoon, Illinois) tallied a single, which sent freshman Olivia Clark-Kittleson (Carbondale, Illinois) and junior Toni Braun (Evanston, Indiana) home for what would be USI's final two runs of the game.

Senior pitcher Brooke Harmening (Whiteland, Indiana) tallied her fifth win in the circle, allowing four hits and tallying two strikeouts in seven innings of work, while the loss was handed to Northwood's Maddison Sebald who saw all four runs in her five innings of work.

USI faces regional foe Hillsdale College Saturday at 2 p.m. (CST) before opening up its Dot Richardson Spring Games schedule Sunday with West Chester University at 8 a.m. (CDT) followed by The University of Findlay at Noon (CDT).
