EVANSVILLE, Ind.– University of Southern Indiana Men's Soccer capped off Senior Day with a 2-0 triumph over Quincy University Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. USI saw its record rise to 6-6-2 and 4-6-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Quincy dropped to 8-5-1, 7-4-1 GLVC.
In what would appear to be a quiet first half according to the box score, USI and Quincy both saw numerous chances to jump on the scoreboard. After one half, the Hawks owned the advantage in shots, 7-4, while each team earned a corner kick a piece.
The Eagles were the first to get on the board with just 17 minutes left to play. Sophomore
Pedro Castro scored after senior
Logan Ball played a ball to the feet of Castro who found himself free in the box and fired past the Quincy goalkeeper. The goal is the third of the season for Castro and the second game-winning goal of the season for the Brazil native.
USI would ensure victory with a second goal less than 10 minutes after Castro's goal. Sophomore
Trevor Skeith sprinted down the touchline and crossed the ball to junior
Brian Fischer. Fischer turned and slipped the ball to sophomore
Riley Belding, who powered the ball into the side of the net.
The Eagles were aided by a clean-sheet posted by senior goalkeeper
Auston Bruder. Bruder earned his second-straight victory between the posts, while compiling four saves during the match.
The Eagles hit the road next weekend for a trio of conference contests in Missouri. USI opens the weekend with a match in St. Charles, Missouri against the Maryville University Saints on Friday evening. The Eagles conclude the road weekend with a contest against the University of Missouri-St. Louis in St. Louis on Sunday afternoon. The regular season concludes on Tuesday, October 27 when USI faces Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky.
