Eagles power past Bulldogs in thriller

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team powered passed Truman State University 2-1 in a thriller on a cool Friday evening at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles rise to 5-6-2 overall, 3-6-2 in the GLVC, while the Bulldogs finish the day 6-8, 5-6 in the GLVC.

While no goals were scored in the first half, the first frame was not without action. Truman State owned the advantage on shots in the first period 8-1, but the Screaming Eagles certainly had their chances. USI was just edged in corner kicks 4-3 in the first half.

USI struck first just shy of the 60 minute mark. After a defensive mistake by the Bulldogs, junior forward Braiden Acton slipped the ball to the top of the box where junior midfielder Brian Fischer hit a brilliant ball that curved and slotted in the top corner of the goal.

Truman State would equalize just ten minutes later. The Bulldogs had a free kick 40 yards from goal and found the back of the goal after a few deflections.

USI would have another chance in the final minutes of the contest. After taking control of possession, Acton would once again find the ball just right of the box. Acton sent in a cross that sailed over the head of the pack and found senior forward Josh Weinzapfel. Weinzapfel turned and fired a shot that curved much like Fischer's and found the top right corner.

USI received a strong effort in goal from senior Auston Bruder, who made five saves in the victory.

Truman State held the advantage in shots, 12-9, and corner kicks, 5-4, on the evening, but USI was able to capitalize on both of their shots-on-goal.

The victory for the Eagles is the first home conference triumph of the season.

The Eagles return to Strassweg Field on Sunday afternoon to face the Hawks of Quincy University. Quincy enters the Sunday showdown at 8-4-1, 7-3-1 in the GLVC and fresh off a 4-1 loss to Bellarmine University on Friday evening.
