Eagles outlast Panthers in three-set thriller

EVANSVILLE, Ind.---In University of Southern Indiana volleyball team's match against Midwest Region opponent Ohio Dominican University, it was a battle of who wants it more, with the Screaming Eagles coming out on top, routing the Panthers, 3-0 (31-29, 32-30, 25-13), in a thrilling match that took the first two frames well pass the needed 25-point score.
 
USI improves to 3-0; opening its season up, Friday, at the Dunn Hospitality Invitational, sweeping both University of North Alabama, before ending the night with another regional win against Hillsdale College.
 
Leading the Eagles' attack was senior Lauren DeShaney (Appleton, Wisconsin) who put down 11 kills, with junior middle blocker Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) following behind with 10 of her own, along with two services aces, and two blocks.
 
Southern Indiana overcame a six-point deficit to claim the first set, 31-29. It was back-to-back kills by junior right side hitter Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana) and DeShaney that ended the set in favor of the Eagles.
 
The same six-point scenario occurred in the following set, with USI down 19-13, and in the trailing position, until a kill by Winter tied the frame at 22-22. Another battle for set point ensued with the Eagles pulling ahead thanks to a three-point run that featured a kill by DeShaney, off a pass from sophomore setter Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana), a service ace by Oberbroeckling, and kill by Winter to end the set at 32-30.
 
Down 7-3 in the final set, USI rallied together to pull off an 11 point run that set the pace for its 25-13 win. Sophomore middle blocker Amy Zwissler (Bloomington, Indiana), who totaled three blocks, was a perfect 4-for-4 in her attack, which contributed to the Eagles outhitting the Panthers .423 to .091. Oberbroeckling and Winter contributed as well, putting down four and three kills, respectively.
 
The Eagles close out the tournament against 23rd ranked University of West Florida at 7 p.m., before opening up Great Lakes Valley Conference play against William Jewell College, Saturday, September 13 at 5 p.m. in the Physical Activities Center.
