Eagles fall in straight-sets to Miners

Southern Indiana (6-3, 2-2 GLVC): 0
at Missouri S & T (5-5, 3-1 GLVC): 3
Box Score: Sortable

ROLLA, Mo.---University of Southern Indiana senior outside hitter Lauren DeShaney (Appleton, Wisconsin) racked up a match-high 13 kills but it wouldn't be enough as the Screaming Eagles fell in straight-sets (19-25, 21-25, 20-25) to Missouri University of Science & Technology Sunday afternoon in Rolla, Missouri.

USI falls to 6-3 overall, 2-2 in Great Lakes Conference Valley play, while the Miners improve to 3-1 in conference, 5-5 overall.

Senior outside hitter Fawn Ryan (Batesville, Indiana), junior middle blocker Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois), along with sophomore middle blocker Amy Zwissler (Bloomington, Indiana) each came up with five kills and three blocks.

Junior right side hitter Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana) tallied a team-high 13 digs, while freshman Shannon Farrell (Munster, Indiana) contributed 11. Keep the pace on the court were sophomores Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana) and Alaina Page (Logansport, Indiana) with 15 and 12 assists, respectively.

The Eagles rallied with S&T for a lead in the opening frame, but a 5-0 Miner run late in the set proved to be too much to overcome as the home team claimed the 25-19 win and 1-0 lead in the match.

After a brief lead by USI in the second stanza, Missouri S&T took over and lead until the end for a 25-21 set-two win.

Down 2-0, the Eagles came out in the third frame ready to battle, holding a lead until a 3-0 run by the Miners set USI back. Five of the Eagles' final points were due to S&T errors. Unable to reclaim the front position, USI eventually fell 25-20 in the final frame.

USI returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. in the Physical Activities Center as it hosts Saint Joseph's College, followed by Indianapolis the following day at 3 p.m.
