Sortable SPRINGFIELD, Mo.---The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team rallied back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Drury University, 3-1 (21-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-19), Saturday evening in Springfield, Missouri.
The Screaming Eagles improve to 6-2 overall, 2-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Panthers still search for their first conference win falling 0-3 in the GLVC, 5-3 overall.
USI came together after dropping the first set, with leaders coming from all over the roster.
Leading USI's attacking game was junior middle blocker
Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) and senior outside hitter
Fawn Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) who combined for 25 kills. Freshman outside hitter
Shelbi Morris (Brazil, Indiana) came off the bench to rack up a team-high 16 digs in her first collegiate match. Sophomore setter
Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana) kept the pace on the court tallying a match-high 39 assists, and also led at the net with five blocks.
The opening frame was dominated by the Panthers, who raced out to a six-point lead, later extending it to 11 as USI trailed 21-10. The Eagles capitalized on Drury errors, before Shoultz put the ball down, off a pass from Morris, bringing the score to 22-15 and forcing a timeout by the home team.
Back on the court, two-straight attacking errors by USI put the Panthers in set-point position. The Eagles tried for a comeback, going on a six-point run, but were not successful as Drury captured the first frame 25-21.
USI jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set, lead by Winter who put down three kills. The Panthers rallied back, knotting the score at 10-10 before the Eagles raced away with a 25-17 win. Winter ended the set tallying 10 kills off 12 attacks and no errors for a .833 attacking percentage.
The Eagles grabbed the final two sets with scores of 25-21 and 25-19 for a 3-1 win.
USI concludes its week traveling to Rolla, Missouri, taking on Missouri University of Science & Technology Sunday at 1 p.m. before returning home Friday, September 26, for a 7 p.m. match against East Division opponent Saint Joseph's College.
