EVANSVILLE, Ind.---The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team fell in straight sets (25-19, 25-21, 25-20) to Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division leader, Rockhurst University, Sunday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center.
The Screaming Eagles fall to 1-1 in conference, 5-2 overall, while the Hawks remain perfect at 7-0 overall, 2-0 in the GLVC.
Senior
Fawn Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) led the Eagles, with nine kills on 34 attempts, but committed just as many errors, leaving her with a .000 attacking percentage., while fellow classmate
Lauren DeShaney (Appleton, Wisconsin) and junior middle blocker
Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) combined for 13 kills.
At the net, sophomore
Amy Zwissler (Bloomington, Indiana) came up with a match-high six blocks, while also tallying five kills off nine attempts and just one error for a .444 attacking percentage.
Freshman libero,
Jessica Lee (Mackinaw, Illinois), lead USI with 12 digs, while junior right side hitter
Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana) and sophomore defensive specialist
Paige Newvine (Elkhart, Indiana), who came off the bench, tallied nine digs apiece.
The Eagles opened the match up trailing Rockhurst, 4-0, unable to overtake and gain a lead. Down 23-12 late in the set, USI prevented the Hawks from taking the first frame with ease, going on a six-point run that forced a timeout by the visiting team. Rockhurst outhit USI .175 to .057 as the Eagles were only able to get nine kills down off 35 attempts, while committing seven errors.
Down 1-0 heading into the second frame, USI battled with the Hawks, as the set featured five tied scores and two lead changes. Winter led, totaling five of the Eagles' 12 kills, but it still was not enough as Rockhurst took a 2-0 lead with its 25-21 set win.
The Hawks took the third frame, 25-20, but not before a head-to-head battle with USI, as the Eagles were able to tie it up at 19-19. Three-straight kills from Rockhurst turned out to be all it needed to end the set it its favor and hand the Eagles their first conference loss of the season.
USI heads to Springfield, Missouri, Saturday to face Drury University in a 5 p.m. match, before meeting Missouri University of Science & Technology the following day at 1 p.m. in Rolla, Missouri.
