Eagles open GLVC schedule at home



EVANSVILLE, Ind
.--- The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team opens its 2014 Great Lakes Valley Conference slate this weekend, in the Physical Activities Center, taking on two West Division opponents.
 
The Screaming Eagles face William Jewell College Saturday at 5 p.m., before a 1 p.m. match against Rockhurst University Sunday.
 
USI enters this weekend with a 4-1 overall record that features three wins against Midwest Region opponents and its only loss to then-ranked No. 23 West Florida.
 
Leading the Eagles' attack are senior outside hitters Fawn Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) and Lauren DeShaney (Appleton, Wisconsin), with 41 and 40 kills, respectively. Ryan, who enters this weekend hitting .205, averages 2.273 kills per set, while DeShaney is averaging 2.67 kills per set.
 
Not far behind the senior leaders, is junior middle blocker Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) who currently averages 2.33 kills per set and leads USI in blocks and service aces. She has totaled 20 blocks, and 11 service aces, averaging 1.33 blocks per set.
 
Freshman Jessica Lee (Mackinaw, Illinois), leads the Eagles and is fourth in the GLVC in digs, totaling 79 and averaging 5.27 per set, while setter Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana) ranks eighth in the conference, leading USI with 135 assists, averaging nine per set.
 
Cardinal notes: William Jewell comes to Evansville trying to break a three-match loosing streak. Currently 1-5, the Cardinals picked up their only win against East Central University, taking the Tigers in four sets.
 
Hawk notes: Rockhurst currently sports a 4-0 record and takes on Emporia State University Thursday evening before making its way east to take on Bellarmine University and USI.
 
The Hawk's junior middle hitter Preecy Seever was named GLVC Offensive Player of the Week, hitting .505 with 62 kills and 11 blocks in 14 sets to help Rockhurst to its perfect opening-weekend record.
