SortableGames played at Lewis University ROMEOVILLE, Ill.---Trying to bounce-back after Saturday's split with Lewis University, the University of Southern Indiana softball team powered through a doubleheader sweep over the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday in Romeoville, Illinois. The Screaming Eagles needed only five innings to defeat the Rangers, 10-1, in game one, and followed up with a 6-4, nine-inning win in the nightcap.
USI (19-12, 11-11 GLVC) outhit the Rangers in game one, 11-5, with junior
Brooke Harmening (Whiteland, Indiana) earning the win for her efforts in the circle during the opener, improving to 12-5 on the season.
The Eagles began their scoring run in the opener, during the first half of the third. With bases loaded and no outs, Harmening's single to center field sent junior
MacKenzi Dorsam (Dubois, Indiana) and sophomore
Toni Braun (Evanston, Indiana) home for a 2-0 lead.
Senior
Kelsey Jankowski (Cedar Lake, Indiana) followed up with an RBI-single of her own, as senior
Teri Newmaster (Elberfeld, Indiana) crossed home plate for USI's third run.
Wisconsin-Parkside (2-18, 2-14 GLVC) capitalized on Eagle errors in its portion of the third, tallying an unearned run, to cut USI's lead to 3-1.
In the top of the fifth, Newmaster had a leadoff single and then proceeded to steal second, settling in perfect scoring position. She rounded home after Jankowski's RBI-single down the right field line.
A pitching change by the Rangers didn't slow USI's momentum down, as freshman
Haley Hodges (Portage, Indiana), senior
Alison Nord (Gentryville, Indiana), and Braun, followed with an RBI apiece. Dorsam sealed the deal with a double to right center that brought three runners across the plate, boosting the Eagles to a 10-1 lead.
Wisconsin-Parkside could not get the needed runs in the bottom of the fifth, earning the game-one loss.
In the nightcap, the Rangers raced out to 4-0 lead and almost walked away with the win, but the Eagles battled, scoring four runs to tie the game and force the extra innings.
Both teams remained scoreless in the eighth, but Dorsam would make sure USI would leave victorious, as she singled to left field, with two outs and bases loaded in the ninth, sending senior
Kyla Gogel (Fulda, Indiana) and Hodges home for the winning runs.
The Eagles used the arms of Harmening, freshman
Alisha Ludwig (Terre Haute, Indiana), and sophomore
Sarah Owens (Indianapolis, Indiana), with Owens (7-7) earning the win for her work in the final two innings.
USI returns home to the USI Softball Field Tuesday for a doubleheader against region opponent Kentucky Wesleyan College. Firs pitch for the non-conference twinbill is set for 2 p.m.
