EVANSVILLE, Ind.--- The University of Southern Indiana softball team battled to keep Bellarmine University from crossing home plate as it completed its second Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep, defeating the Knights 1-0, and 2-0 Wednesday at the USI Softball Field.

The Screaming Eagles, who handed visiting Bellarmine its first conference doubleheader loss of the season, improve to 16-11 overall, 8-10 in GLVC play. The Knights falls to 23-9 overall, 16-4 in conference.

Bellarmine opened the game with a double down the right field line, with its runner advancing to third on the next at-bat, off a sacrifice bunt. However, it could not get the needed hits, leaving one on in the opener.

The same happened for the Eagles in their first go at the plate, as senior Teri Newmaster reached the bases first for USI off a perfectly positioned bunt. A quick pop-up and strikeout, left the Elberfeld, Indiana, native stranded at first.

Bellarmine registered just two more hits the rest of the game, while the Eagles worked their way to the game-one shutout.

With two outs and bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, junior Brooke Harmening (Whiteland, Indiana) singled to left center, advancing senior Alison Nord (Gentryville, Indiana) home for the game-winning run.

Harmening, who also spent all seven innings in the circle, tallied her 10th win of the season, throwing just 76 pitches and seven strikeouts.

The Eagles got out to an early 1-0 lead in the nightcap, with another RBI-single from Harmening.

With one out in the bottom of the first, Newmaster reached on an error by Bellarmine's starting pitcher, Tanner Tevis. The centerfielder continued to work the bases well, heading to second on a wild pitch, before heading home off Harmening's single.

Newmaster was involved again in a USI run, this time in the bottom of the fifth. After junior MacKenzi Dorsam (Dubois, Indiana) reached first off a single hit to left field, Newmaster singled a bunt just left of home plate. Attempting to get Newmaster out, an overthrow to first, by Bellarmine's third baseman, allowed Dorsam to score for USI's 2-0 lead.

The Eagles made a pitching change in the sixth, bringing Harmening in to relive starting hurler, sophomore Sarah Owens (Indianapolis, Indiana).

Owens picked up the win improving to 6-7; while Harmening earned her third save of the season. Bellarmine's Tevis was tabbed with her first loss, falling to 5-1 overall.

The Eagles head to Romeoville, Illinois, this weekend to face Lewis University along with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in doubleheader action. USI faces the Flyers Saturday at 10 a.m., before meeting the Rangers at Lewis University's field Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
