EVANSVILLE, Ind.---The University of Southern Indiana softball team dropped its Friday afternoon doubleheader to visiting Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division opponent Maryville University, falling 6-5 and 7-2.

The Screaming Eagles drop down to 19-18 overall and 11-17 in GLVC play, while the Saints improve to 16-20 overall, 11-12 in conference.

USI had a big first-game opener, scoring three runs for a 3-0 lead over the Saints. Freshman Grace Clark (Indianapolis, Indiana), sophomore Janna Green (Glenwood, Indiana), and senior Kelsey Jankowski (Cedar Lake, Indiana) each tallied an RBI to help build the USI advantage.

The Eagles would hold their position until the fourth when Maryville pounded out back-to-back homeruns, cutting USI's lead to 3-2.

Clark was able to extend the home team's lead to 5-3 with a two-run homer to left field, however, the Saints answered back, taking the lead off an RBI-single and a three-run RBI-double, in the top of the seventh.

USI outhit the Saints, 12-10, with Clark, Green, and junior MacKenzi Dorsam (Dubois, Indiana) all going 3-for-4, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles fell 6-5 after failing to get any more runs across during their portion of the seventh.

Junior pitcher Brooke Harmening (Whiteland, Indiana) took the loss in the circle, falling to 12-8 on the season.

Maryville opened game two with a two-run homer to left field, leaving the Eagles to play catch up.

A single to left center by senior Teri Newmaster (Elberfeld, Indiana), in the following half-inning, allowed Dorsam to cross home plate for USI's first run of game two.

Dorsam's run would be the only for the Eagles, for a while, as the Saints went on to score five more runs for a 7-2 lead.

Jankowski was able to score for USI, in the final inning, sending the ball over the right field fence, but Maryville walked away with the 7-2 win.

The Eagles used the arms of sophomores Sarah Owens (Indianapolis, Indiana) and Devon Rutherford (Newburgh, Indiana), along with freshman Alisha Ludwig (Terre Haute, Indiana) in game two. Owens, who started in the circle, was tabbed with the loss, though, falling to 7-10.

USI continues action Saturday when it hosts No. 6 University of Missouri-St. Louis for another two at the USI Softball Field. First pitch is set for noon, with the Eagles honoring its four seniors (Jankowski, Newmaster, Kyla Gogel, and Alison Nord) at the conclusion of game two.
