Eagles battle but fall twice to No. 21 Truman State

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.---The University of Southern Indiana softball team rallied for a comeback in both games against 21st ranked Truman State University, but the Bulldogs proved to be too much as the Screaming Eagles fell 12-6 and 8-2.
 
Truman State, improves to 31-6 overall, 21-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action, while the Eagles fall to 19-14 overall, 11-13 in GLVC play.
 
The Bulldogs got out to a 3-0 lead by the end of the third inning, leaving the Eagles to play catch-up.
 
USI answered the call in the first half of the fifth with two outs and sophomore Janna Green (Glenwood, Indiana), senior Teri Newmaster (Elberfeld, Indiana) and junior MacKenzi Dorsam (Dubois, Indiana), safely reaching bases.
 
Junior hurler Brooke Harmening (Whiteland, Indiana) was then walked, sending Green home for USI's first run.
 
The Eagles got the boost they needed, in that same inning, as freshman Grace Clark (Indianapolis, Indiana) sent the ball flying over the centerfield fence, cleaning the bases, tallying four runs to push USI ahead 5-3.
 
Truman State would answer back with five runs of their own, in the next half inning, and four more in the bottom of the sixth for a 12-5 lead.
 
Harmening tallied another RBI-single in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs took the opener 12-6.
 
Harmening earned the loss in the circle, falling to 12-6 on the season.
 
The Eagles used the arms of sophomore Sarah Owens (Indianapolis, Indiana), sophomore Devon Rutherford (Newburgh, Indiana), and freshman Alisha Ludwig (Terre Haute, Indiana) in the nightcap.   
 
Though giving up only one run in her two innings of work, Owens was tabbed with the loss, falling to 7-8.
 
Down 7-0 in the first half of the sixth, Dorsam had a lead off walk that was followed up by two straight outs. With two outs and one on, Clark quickly ended TSU's hopes of shutout with a homerun to center field.
 
The Bulldogs would score their final run in the second half of the sixth for an 8-2 nightcap win.
 
USI continues doubleheader action tomorrow at noon against Quincy University. The Hawks, fell twice to Bellarmine University Friday afternoon. Live statistics will be available for both games at gousieagles.com.
 
The Eagles return home Friday and Saturday to the USI Softball Field when they host Maryville University and the University of Missouri-St. Louis, respectively.
