ROLLA, Mo.—Despite a career-high 18 strikeouts from junior hurler
Brooke Harmening in game one and a two-run first inning in game two, the University of Southern Indiana softball team suffered a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference losses to host Missouri University of Science & Technology Saturday afternoon.
USI (4-3, 0-2 GLVC) hit into two double plays and stranded 11 runners on base in the opener as it suffered a 1-0 loss in 13 innings. The Screaming Eagles led, 2-1, after one inning in game two, but Missouri S&T scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings to earn a 3-2 win.
In game one, Missouri S&T capitalized on a one-out walk in the top of 13th inning to break a scoreless tie. Shelby Michaelis followed the free pass two batters later with a two-out, RBI-double as the Miners broke the scoring drought.
The Eagles had runners at first and second with two outs in the last half of the 13th inning, but could not push the tying run across the plate as they suffered their first loss in four games.
Harmening (2-2) was charged with the loss despite fanning 18 batters and giving up just walks. She scattered nine hits throughout 13 frames and threw 176 pitches in the setback.
In game two, Missouri S&T jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a tally in the top half of the first inning, but a lead-off home run by junior catcher/infielder
MacKenzi Dorsam in the bottom of the first tied the contest at 1-1. Freshman outfielder
Grace Clark hit an RBI-single later in the frame as USI took its first lead of the day.
Missouri S&T (2-3, 2-0 GLVC) capitalized on a lead-off single in the fifth inning to tie the game at 2-2; then used a lead-off single and two walks to score the go-ahead run in the sixth frame. The Eagles got a runner on base in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, but could not get a runner past second base.
Sophomore pitcher
Sarah Owens was charged with the loss after surrendering three runs off eight hits in five-plus innings of work. Owens (2-1) struck out six batters and issued two walks.
USI's doubleheader with Drury University Sunday has been cancelled due to field conditions. The Eagles return to action Tuesday when they take on Southwest Minnesota State University at noon (CDT) and Concordia University-St. Paul at 2 p.m. at the Rebel Spring Games in Winter Haven, Florida.
