EVANSVILLE, Ind.---University of Southern Indiana sophomore
Kaitlyn England (Danville, Indiana) recorded a season-high three RBIs, off a double to left center, to push the Screaming Eagles softball team ahead of St. Joseph's College, 4-3, in game one of Sunday's doubleheader with the visiting Pumas. However, the Eagles could not find the rhythm in game two, falling 1-0 and settling for a 1-1 split.
USI finished this week of Great Lakes Valley Conference action with a 1-3 record and stand 11-8 overall, 3-7 in GLVC play. The Pumas, who dropped both games to Bellarmine University Saturday, improve to 5-5 in conference, 8-12 overall.
Saint Joseph's Briana Wagner opened the first game with a homer to left field for a quick 1-0 lead, but things eventually picked up for the Eagles in their portion of the first as sophomore
Janna Green (Glenwood, Indiana) sent a sacrifice fly out to center field for an RBI-single and the tying point.
Wagner produced an RBI-double for the Pumas in the top of the third to give the visiting team a 3-1 advantage over USI.
In the bottom of the sixth, with bases loaded and two outs on the board, England sent the ball flying to the left center fence, bringing all three runners home for the 4-3 lead and eventual win.
Junior hurler
Brooke Harmening (Whiteland, Indiana) recorded the win in the circle, improving to 7-3 on the season, allowing three runs off two hits and totaling 13 strikeouts.
Game two was a scoreless matchup until late in the top of the fifth when SJC's Audra Rains doubled to left field, sending a runner home for the 1-0 win.
USI heads to Louisville, Kentucky, Wednesday to face Bellarmine University for a doubleheader slated for noon.
