EVANSVILLE, Ind.---The University of Southern Indiana softball team dropped both games of its first home Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader to East Division foe, the University of Indianapolis, Saturday at the USI Softball Field. The Screaming Eagles lost game one 1-0, before falling 3-2 in the nightcap.
Â
USI falls to 2-6 in conference play, 10-7 overall, while the Greyhounds, who travel to Bellarmine University tomorrow, improve to 5-1 GLVC, 12-6 overall.
Â
Strong pitching by UIndy's Morgan Foley helped the Greyhounds keep the Eagles off the bases, as she totaled 14 strikeouts, and just one walk in 24 at-bats, improving to 7-4 on the season.Â
Â
With two outs in the bottom of the first, the Eagles gained potential scoring action as sophomore shortstop
Janna Green (Glenwood, Indiana) doubled to left field. Junior hurler
Brooke Harmening (Whiteland, Indiana) continued the momentum with a base hit up the middle, but Green, who was signaled to head home, did not make it in time and was tagged by the catcher at the plate.
Â
Following the opening innings, there was little action for both teams until UIndy took the plate in the top of the fifth and secured what would be the game's only run. With runners on first and second, the Greyhounds produced a base hit up the middle, which was good enough for the game-winning RBI-single.
Â
The loss was charged to Harmening who fell to 6-3 overall.
Â
Things were looking better for the Eagles in game two as they grabbed an early 1-0 lead in their portion of the second.
Â
Freshman
Haley Hodges (Portage, Indiana) worked the bases well, doubling to right center then advancing to third on a passed ball. After a pop up and a strikeout left Hodges stranded on third, senior outfielder
Teri Newmaster (Elberfeld, Indiana) brought her home off a single to left center, before proceeding to steal second.
Â
With Newmaster on third and Green on first, the Eagles looked to batting leader, junior
MacKenzi Dorsam (Dubois, Indiana) for another RBI, but was denied following a Greyhound pitching change.
Â
Harmening relieved sophomore hurler
Sarah Owens in the middle of the fifth, following back-to-back homeruns by UIndy, as the Greyhounds took a 3-1 lead.
Â
The Eagles scored an unearned run in the following inning, but it wasn't enough as Indianapolis walked away with the win.
Â
Though Owens recorded the loss for USI in game two, falling to 4-4, the Indianapolis native matched her season-high record of six strikeouts.
Â
USI hosts Saint Joseph's College Sunday for a doubleheader slated for a noon start. The Pumas fell to 4-4, 7-11 overall, after dropping a pair against Bellarmine University Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky.
