Eagles finally open home conference schedule Saturday

EVANSVILLE, Ind
.----After weather forced the University of Southern Indiana softball to move its home conference opener to Rolla, Missouri, and cancel a scheduled home doubleheader against Drury University, the Screaming Eagles will finally get to enjoy playing time on their home field.

USI will kick off the third week of Great Lakes Valley Conference action with a doubleheader Saturday at noon against University of Indianapolis, followed by another two against the visiting Pumas of Saint Joseph's College Sunday at noon.

WEEKLY NOTES-

Eagles perfect in Florida: USI went 4-0 during its time at the Rebel Spring Games in Winter Haven, Florida, last week. Those wins included a 10-1 decision against Midwest Region opponent Ferris State, as well as a 9-0 shutout in its tournament opener against Southwest Minnesota State University.

Rocky road play: The Eagles are coming off doubleheader splits with Rockhurst University and William Jewell College. USI dropped the first game, 4-2, against the Hawks before picking up its first conference win in game two, with a 3-1 decision. In Monday's action against the Cardinals, the Eagles, who were down 4-0, scored five unanswered runs for a 5-4 win in game one, but fell 3-1 in the nightcap.

Current standing: Entering its third week of conference play, the Eagles hold a 2-4 record, 10-5 overall, and are fifth in the East Division.

Bellarmine University leads the East at 8-0 GLVC, 15-5 overall, while league newcomer Truman State is at the top of the West at 8-0, 16-3 overall.

Current team leaders: Junior catcher MacKenzi Dorsam (Dubois, Indiana) leads the Eagles, hitting a .409 with two doubles, two homeruns and 14 RBIs. Sophomore shortstop Janna Green (Glenwood, Indiana) is right behind at .392, totaling one triple, three doubles, and 10 RBIs.

In the circle, junior Brooke Harmening leads USI with an ERA of 1.52 and 76 strikeouts. The Whiteland, Indiana, also has a batting average of .340, which includes five doubles, two homeruns, and 13 RBIs.

UIndy notes: The Greyhounds (3-1 GLVC, 10-6 overall) are second in the East, and like many schools in the GLVC, only have one week of conference play under their belts because of weather cancellations.

Eagles vs. Greyhounds: Indianapolis trails the all-time series record against the Eagles, 28-22. The Greyhounds swept USI 4-0 last year, picking up two wins in Evansville and two on their home field.

Saint Joseph's notes: The Pumas are third in the East with a 4-2 conference record, 7-9 overall, and will make their way to Evansville after facing Bellarmine University Saturday.

SJC opened GLVC play with a sweep of Rockhurst, followed by a split against William Jewell. Last week, the Pumas only got two games against Drury in, as weather forced the cancellation of their doubleheader with Missouri S&T.

Eagles vs. Pumas: USI leads the series against the Pumas, 34-14. The Eagles split last year's series against SJC, 2-2.

Tracking the Eagles: Live statistics along with a live video feed and broadcast will be available for this weekend's games. A link is provided on the Eagles' softball schedule page on gousieagles.com.
