LIBERTY, Mo.---The University of Southern Indiana softball team rallied from a 4-0 deficit to defeat William Jewell College, 5-4, in game one, but could not keep the momentum going into game two, falling 3-1.

USI stands at 2-4 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action, 10-5 overall, while the Cardinals end the second week of conference play at 2-4, 6-10 overall.

In the day's opener, William Jewell grabbed an early 4-0 lead in their portion of the first with a grand slam, but failed to get any runs on the board throughout the remainder of the game.

The Screaming Eagles saw no action until the fourth frame when sophomore shortstop Janna Green (Glenwood, Indiana) doubled, sending junior catcher MacKenzi Dorsam (Dubois, Indiana) across the plate. Both Green and Dorsam led USI with two RBIs each.

Green advanced to third on a wild pitch, before junior hurler Brooke Harmening (Whiteland, Indiana) grounded out to the shortstop, sending Green home for USI's second run.

In the bottom of the fifth, with sophomore Kaitlyn England (Danville, Indiana) and senior Kyla Gogel (Fulda, Indiana) on second and third, respectively, Dorsam lit up the board with a base hit, earning her two RBIs and knotting the score at 4-4.

Following a change in the circle by the home team, sophomore Toni Braun (Evanston, Indiana) was walked and was followed up by a base hit from Green for USI's winning hit.

Harmening earned the win in the circle, improving to 6-2, allowing just four hits and totaling 11 strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the Eagles grabbed a 1-0 lead, in the opening frame, off an RBI-single by Green, but WJC answered back with a run of their own to tie the game.

The Cardinals score two more runs off a homer in the fifth for the lead, while USI failed to get any more of their own, eventually falling 3-1.

Sophomore pitcher Sarah Owens (Indianapolis, Indiana) took the loss for USI, falling 4-3.

USI returns to conference action Saturday when they host the University of Indianapolis for a doubleheader slated for a noon start.  Following their time against the Greyhounds, the Eagles host the Pumas of Saint Joseph's College Sunday.
