KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Junior pitcher/first baseman
Brooke Harmening and senior designated player
Kelsey Jankowski each had solo home runs in the top of the seventh inning as the University of Southern Indiana softball team rallied from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Rockhurst University, 3-1, in the second game of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader.
USI (9-4, 1-3 GLVC), which lost the opening game, 4-2, on a three-run, walk-off home run, trailed 1-0 heading into the top of the sixth inning of game two.
Junior catcher/infielder MacKenzie Dorsam singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch with two outs in the sixth inning. Sophomore shortstop
Janna Green followed with a single to score Dorsam and tie the contest at 1-1.
Harmening (5-2), who earned the win in game two after fanning 10 batters and allowing just one unearned run, led the seventh inning off with a solo home run. Jankowski hit another solo shot two batters later as the Eagles built a 3-1 lead.
Rockhurst (6-10, 1-3 GLVC) got runners on first and second with one out to begin the seventh inning, but Harmening got the following two batters to pop up in foul territory to seal the victory.
The Hawks began the seventh inning of game one in a similar fashion, but following a pitching change and a wild pitch, Rockhurst centerfielder Alex Hill hit a one-out, three-run home run over the centerfield fence to give the Hawks a 4-2 victory.
USI struck first as Harmening and Green each had RBIs in the top of the first inning to give the Screaming Eagles a 2-0 advantage. Rockhurst answered with a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning; then used the three-run seventh frame to earn the win.
Sophomore pitcher
Sarah Owens was charged with the loss in game one after giving up three runs off five hits in 6.1 innings of work. Owens (4-2), who was pulled in the seventh inning with runners at first and second and the Eagles ahead, 2-1, struck out five batters and issued just one walk. Freshman left-handed pitcher
Alisha Ludwig gave up the three-run home run.
The Eagles' GLVC doubleheader with William Jewell College Sunday in Liberty, Missouri, has been postponed until Monday, with a tentative start time of noon, due to inclement weather.
