Eagles end Rebel Spring Games with two wins

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.--- The University of Southern Indiana softball team scored a combined 16 runs off 18 hits Thursday as it ended the Rebel Spring Games with a 10-1 win, in five innings, over Midwest region foe Ferris State University and a 6-3 win over Southwest Minnesota State University.
 
USI scored two runs in the top of the first inning to grab an early advantage over Ferris State. The Screaming Eagles, who out hit the Bulldogs 8-3, racked up four runs in the second and another four in their portion of the fifth to end the game two innings early.
 
Sophomore shortstop Janna Green (Glenwood, Indiana) went 3-of-4, leading the Eagles with three RBIs. Senior Kelsey Jankowski (Cedar Lake, Indiana), along with juniors MacKenzi Dorsam (Dubois, Indiana) and Brooke Harmening (Whiteland, Indiana) drove in two RBIs apiece.
 
Harmening earned the win after allowing one run off three hits in five innings of work. She finished the game with four strikeouts, improving to 4-2 on the season.
 
USI kept the momentum going into game two against the Mustangs, scoring six runs in the first four innings, while SMSU remained scoreless.
 
Harmening had an impressive showing at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and homerun whlie, senior Teri Newmaster (Elberfeld, Indiana) went 1-of-3, driving in two RBIs, and Dorsam was 2-for-2 with 1 RBI.
 
Sophomore Sarah Owens (Indianapolis, Indiana) spent five innings in the circle before being relieved by freshman Alisha Ludwig (Terra Haute, Indiana). Owens, who earned the win for USI, totaled four strikeouts and allowed two runs off five hits. Ludwig, who made her first collegiate appearance in the pitcher's circle, came up with one strikeout.
 
The Eagles, who improved to 3-0 against the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, 8-3 overall, return to Great Lakes Valley Conference action Saturday at noon when they travel to Rockhurst University for a doubleheader.
