EVANSVILLE, Ind.--- After weather and poor field conditions forced the University of Southern Indiana softball team to postpone its home opener multiple times, the Screaming Eagles were finally able to break in their field Saturday evening and did so with a 10-8 win over regional foe Saginaw Valley State University.
In the final game of the USI Spring Classic, the Cardinals (2-1 overall) saw action from four of their five pitchers, with Alexa Gehris (1-1) eventually earning the loss. Junior
Brooke Harmening (Whiteland, Indiana) started in the circle for the Eagles (4-1 overall), but was relieved midway through the third by sophomore
Sarah Owens (Indianapolis, Indiana) who captured the win, improving to 2-0.
Saginaw opened up the game with a first-pitch homer to left field, eventually taking a 2-0 lead off an RBI-single in the top of the second. USI answered back, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second for a 5-2 lead.
USI's first run came off an RBI-single by senior
Teri Newmaster (Elberfeld, Indiana) and was followed by sophomore
Janna Green (Glenwood, Indiana), who notched two RBIs off a double to left center. Junior catcher
MacKenzi Dorsam (Dubois, Indiana) earned a fourth run for USI, crossing home plate after a failed pick off attempt and throwing error by SVSU's catcher. Freshman
Grace Clark (Indianapolis, Indiana) sent an RBI-single through to the left side for the three-run advantage.
The Cardinals scored one run in the third and two in the fourth taking a 6-5 lead before back-to-back RBI-singles by Owens and sophomore
Toni Braun (Evanston, Indiana) put USI ahead 7-6.
USI capitalized on multiple wild pitches by SVSU in the bottom of the sixth with Newmaster scoring on one for an 8-7 lead. Senior
Kelsey Jankowski (Cedar Lake, Indiana) sealed the win for Southern Indiana with an RBI-double to left field.
The Eagles are scheduled to open up Great Lakes Valley Conference play Saturday, March 8, with a double header against visiting Missouri S&T. USI hosts Drury University the following day, before making its way to Winter Haven, Florida, to compete in the Rebel Springs Games.
