Huntsville, Ala.---The University of Southern Indiana softball team pounded 21 hits out on Saturday as they powered their way to a sweep of regional opponent Northwood University and Young Harris College at the UAH Charger Chillout in Huntsville, Alabama. The Screaming Eagles routed previously undefeated Northwood, 5-3, before stunning Young Harris, 6-4.
In the opening game USI trailed 1-0 before senior
Kelsey Jankowski (Cedar Lake, Indiana) sent a single to right field late in the third inning. Senior outfielder
Kyla Gogel (Fulda, Indiana) followed up with another single to center field, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
The Eagles received a scoring boost from freshman catcher
Grace Clark (Indianapolis, Indiana) who sent the ball over center field fence, registering her first collegiate homerun. USI continued to play the bases well, grabbing a 4-1 lead, as sophomore
Janna Green (Glenwood, Indiana) tripled to right field and then crossed home plate off a single by sophomore
Kaitlyn England (Danville, Indiana).
With two outs in the fifth inning Green struck out swinging, but was able to reach first off a passed ball. The chain of events allowed junior hurler
Brooke Harmening (Whiteland, Indiana) to cross home for USI's fifth run and a 5-1 lead. Harmening ended the game, tallying seven strikeouts.
Northwood's comeback attempt in the seventh inning failed as the Eagles took the game, 5-3.
USI grabbed an early 1-0 lead in game two, extending the streak to 6-0 in the fifth inning. With freshman
Sadie Foster on first,
MacKenzi Dorsam (Dubois, Indiana) homered to center field on the first pitch. The scoring continued with an RBI-single by both Harmening and Clark.
Down two runs with two outs in the seventh inning, Young Harris used simple hits to try and advance its runners to second and third. The Eagles got the tag they needed at third base, ending the game in their favor, 6-4.
USI returns to action, opening home play, Saturday, February 22, taking on Ohio Dominican University at 1 p.m. followed by Kentucky Wesleyan College at 3 p.m.
