EVANSVILLE, Ind.---The University of Southern Indiana baseball team left two runners on in the ninth, falling 2-1 to sixth-ranked Grand Valley State University Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles dropped to 2-3 overall, while the visiting Lakers picked up their first win of the season, improving to 1-1 overall.
 
USI grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fifth as sophomore third baseman Trent Gunn (Tell City, Indiana) crossed home plate on a balk.
 
The Eagles held the front position until the bottom of the seventh when GVSU's Aaron Overbeck sent an RBI-single through to the left side, knotting the score at 1-1. With runners on first and second, Grand Valley took a 2-1 lead in the eight with another RBI-single to the left side.
 
USI saw action in the ninth as junior short stop Matt Chavarria (Carlsbad, New Mexico) and junior outfielder Tyler Mikrut (Edwardsville, Illinois) both earned base hits with two outs on the board. Senior A.J. Dokey (Howell, Michigan) stepped to the plate to pinch hit for junior catcher Austin Edge (Whitesville, Kentucky), but failed to execute a run home, forcing an out on Mikrut at second.
 
Starting picture for USI Jonathon Wandling (0-1) (Evansville, Indiana), despite the loss, had a strong showing at the mound, pitching seven innings and tallying seven strikeouts.
 
The Eagles, who beat the Lakers 2-1 Friday evening, conclude their three-game series with GVSU Sunday at Noon.
