ST. LOUIS, Mo.----After dropping the opening frame, 25-19, the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team bounced back, taking three-straight sets for a 3-1 win over host University of Missouri St. Louis Saturday evening.
The Screaming Eagles, who are tied for fourth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division with University of Wisconsin-Parkside, improve to 7-8 in conference play, 17-9 overall.
Senior outside hitter
Fawn Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) led the Eagles with a team-high 16 kills, while senior
Lauren DeShaney (Appleton, Wisconsin) along with junior middle blocker
Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinoi) combined for 25 kills. Aiding in the Eagles' attacking game was sophomore setter
Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana) who paced USI with a match-high 50 assists.
Defensively, freshman libero
Jessica Lee (Mackinaw, Illinois) led the Eagles with 22 digs, with junior right side hitter
Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana) tallying 20 of her own.
At the net sophomore middle blocker
Amy Zwissler (Bloomington, Indiana) came up with a match-high five blocks, while both Oberbroeckling and Winter tallied four apiece.
USI struggled to maintain a 9-11 lead in the opening frame, committing four errors, giving UMSL a 14-11 advantage. Down 15-14, the Eagles watched again as the host team capitalized on its errors with a 6-0 run, which turned out to be enough fuel for the Tritons to pull off a 25-19 win.
The Eagles came back from behind to take UMSL 25-18 in the following set, using multiple runs to pull ahead and established their lead.
Putting down just one kill in the first set, DeShaney added seven in the second to lead the Eagles with eight before the half.
Following the break, USI opened the third stanza with a 6-1 lead, forcing the Tritons to take an early timeout. Three kills by Winter along with an UMSL error, pushed the Eagles even farther ahead at 10-2. UMSL tried to recover with multiple point runs of its own but it wouldn't be enough as the Eagles finished the job with a 25-23 win.
Trailing the Eagles two sets to one, UMSL came out firing in the fourth set to build an 11-8 lead, forcing the Eagles to regain the front position. With the help of three-straight kills by Ryan and an ace by Winter, USI grabbed an 18-15 lead, however the Tritons answered back with a 3-0 run of its own. The Eagles used another 3-0 run to separate themselves from UMSL, eventually claiming the set 25-20 and a 3-1 match win.
USI faces Maryville University Sunday at 1 p.m., before closing its regular-season schedule with University of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's College next week Friday and Saturday.
