Eagles sweep Saints in road win

ST. LOUIS, Mo.---University of Southern Indiana senior outside hitter Fawn Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) lead the Screaming Eagles with 10 kills in their 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-14) sweep of Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division opponent Maryville University Sunday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Eagles, who out hit the Saints .260 to .070, improve to 18-9 overall and 8-8 in conference action.

Aiding Ryan in USI's attacking game, were juniors Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana) and Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) who combined for 18 kills and a .394 attacking percentage.

The Eagles got out to an early 8-4 lead in the opening frame, but Maryville soon closed in, tying the set at 12-12. The Saints put up a fight, working their way up to an 18-16 lead, forcing USI to take a timeout. Following the break, however, the Eagles bounced back with a 6-1 run which aided in their 25-20 win. Back-to-back kills by Ryan and Oberbroeckling along with a solo block by senior outside hitter Lauren DeShaney (Appleton, Wisconsin) ended the set in favor of USI.

With the one-set advantage, the Eagles kept the momentum going into the second set, capitalizing on many Maryville errors, as they raced out to an early 12-3 lead. During that time period, the Saints exhausted both of their timeouts, setting the tone for USI's quick 25-15 set two victory.

USI stalled the Saints using a 7-0 run in the third frame which aided in its 25-14 set win and complete sweep over Maryville.

At the conclusion of the match, sophomore middle blocker Amy Zwissler (Bloomington, Indiana) had tallied a game-high six blocks.

Also coming up big defensively was fellow classmate, setter Quin Shoultz, who registered a team-high 15 digs and a match-high 35 assists, while junior defensive specialist Erin Goldschmidt (Smithton, Illinois) added 10 digs.

USI closes out its 2014 regular-season slate Friday and Saturday on the road against University of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's College, respectively.
