EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team could not hold on to its two-set lead, as University of Wisconsin-Parkside came from behind to win the final three, eventually taking the match, 3-2, Friday evening at the Physical Activities Center.
USI falls to 8-5 overall, 4-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Rangers improve to 4-4 in conference, 7-6 overall.
Despite the loss, three USI players posted double digit numbers in kills, while four posted double digit digs.
Senior outside hitter
Fawn Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) led the attack with 16 kills, while junior
Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois), followed up with 12 kills, while also leading at the net with a match-high nine blocks. Senior outside hitter
Lauren DeShaney (Appleton, Wisconsin) added 11 kills.
Defensively, freshman libero
Jessica Lee (Mackinaw, Illinois) led the Eagles with 20 digs, while juniors
Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana), and
Erin Goldschmidt (Smithton, Illinois) came up with 17 and 10 digs, respectively.
Sophomore setter
Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Ohio) tallied her third double-double of the season racking up 45 assists and 11 digs.
USI had a strong showing in the first two sets, grabbing a 2-0 lead before the break. Once back on the court, however, the Rangers came strong, leading all throughout the third set and eventually grabbing a 25-22 win.
The Eagles struggled to get it together in the fourth frame, trailing Wisconsin-Parkside for much of it, before a 5-0 run put them ahead 22-21. USI didn't have the momentum needed to claim the set as the Rangers went on a 4-0 run to claim the set 25-22.
Both teams battled in the final frame as it featured eight ties and multiple lead changes. USI held a 13-11 lead but lost it to a 3-0 run by Wisconsin-Parkside. An attacking error by the Rangers knotted the score at 14-14. A service error by the Eagles followed by a kill by UWP ended the set in favor of the visiting Rangers, 16-14.
The Eagles continue Saturday at 3 p.m. against GLVC East Division leader Lewis University. The Flyers come to Evansville having swept Bellarmine University, 3-0, Friday evening in Louisville, Kentucky. USI concludes its season-long six-match homestand Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a non-conference match against Kentucky State University at the PAC.
