RENSSELAER, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team climbed back to the .500 mark in 2014 with a 3-1 victory over Saint Joseph's College Friday evening in Rensselaer, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles rise to 4-4-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the GLVC, while the Pumas drop to 1-7-1, 1-5-1 GLVC.
USI struck first when sophomore midfielder
Brian Fischer (Jeffersonville, Indiana) recorded his first collegiate goal off a corner kick. Fischer gave the Eagles the 1-0 lead when he hooked a wind-aided corner kick into the Pumas goal.
Saint Joseph's would even the match, 1-1, with tally two minutes before halftime and send the match into the intermission tied.
The USI offense got going quickly in the second half with senior midfielder
Colton Tanner (Jasper, Indiana) scoring the eventual game-winning goal to give USI a 2-1 lead. The goal was Tanner's first goal of the year and came off a rebound from a shot by sophomore forward
Braiden Action (Evansville, Indiana) at 55:02.
The Eagles would seal the victory at 86:53 when senior forward
Caleb Mathers (Clarkston, Michigan) recorded his first goal of the year to give USI a 3-1 advantage. Mathers was assisted on the play by Tanner and junior midfielder
Josh Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana).
Between the posts, junior goalkeeper
Auston Bruder (Evansville, Indiana) raised his record to .500 with his four win of the year. Bruder allowed one goal and made four saves in the win.
The Eagles conclude the road trip Sunday at the University of Indianapolis Sunday. Kick off Sunday is slated for 1:30 p.m. (CDT). USI returns to the friendly surroundings of Strassweg Field October 10 when the Eagles host William Jewell College for a 7:30 p.m. match.
