SPRINGFIELD, Ill.—University of Southern Indiana women's soccer freshman forward
Haley Rheinlander (Evansville, Indiana) scored in the 84th minute to erase a one-goal deficit as the Screaming Eagles battled to a 1-1 double-overtime Great Lakes Valley Conference tie with the University of Illinois Springfield Sunday afternoon.
Rheinlander scored her third goal of the year from about six yards out on a cross that was set up by junior defenders
Megan Herrington (St. Charles, Missouri) and
McKinsey Durham (Madisonville, Kentucky). Both were credited with an assist on the play.
Illinois Springfield (3-11-3, 0-11-3 GLVC) broke a scoreless tie in the 68th minute when Regina Bolin scored on a corner kick from Falyn Lockenour.
USI (3-10-3, 2-9-3 GLVC), which had three shots on goal in the opening half, finally broke through after a shot by freshman midfielder
Maggie Pike (St. Louis, Missouri) was turned away by Illinois Springfield goalie Paige Polonus.
The Eagles had shots on goal in each overtime period, but Polonus was up to the task as she finished with six saves.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Courtney Lofland (Indianapolis, Indiana) racked up three saves in the contest for the Eagles, including one in the second overtime period.
USI concludes the 2014 season Wednesday at 5 p.m. when it hosts Bellarmine University at Strassweg Field. The Knights (13-2-2, 11-1-2 GLVC) defeated McKendree University, 2-1, in Lebanon, Illinois, Sunday to run their win streak to six matches and their undefeated streak to 11.
